ur
hotel in Granada makes a great base for exploring Nicaragua. Granada has many tourist
attractions, all of which are easily accessible from El Club. Here is a list of
attractions in Colonial Granada. Have fun as you explore, whether you do it on your
own or with a tour guide.
The Isletas of Granada
The archipelago of 365 small islands is located on one of the ports of Lake
Nicaragua (Lago Cocibolca), and was created by an old and powerful eruption from
Volcano Mombacho. Las Isletas is home to many flora and fauna, as well as host to
restaurants, homes and other attractions. The lake is the only place in the American
continent where you can find freshwater sharks (Carcharhinus Leucas Valenciennes).
The only 3 places in the world are the Zambezi river in Africa, Brisbane River in
Australia and Lake Nicaragua. One can charter a small boat as part of a group for
a few cordobas. Guides offer 1 hour or 3 hour tours (custom tours can be arranged)
and include lunch or dinner at one of the islands.
Volcano Mombacho
Just outside of Granada, this extinct volcano provides countless tourist activities
and opportunities. The highest point of Mombacho is 1,400 meters. The volcano offers
scenic hikes, canopy tours, and spectacular views of Granada, Laguna de Apoyo, Las
Isletas and endless photo opportunities. The volcano is rich in vegetation and is
also home to wildlife and different species of flowers. If you would like to visit
the volcano, plans can be made with a tour guide. Ask us for more details.
Parque Central (Parque Colon)
Within walking distance of the hotel, the park is the heart of Granada. Here, you
can get a great feel for what Granada is all about. One can see merchants,
restaurants, a cathedral, horse drawn carriages and great colonial architecture.
Stop by and buy souvenirs, eat authentic Nicaraguan food or just relax at the park
with the locals.
Convento San Francisco
According to history, the cathedral is one of the original buildings constructed in
Nicaragua. The convent reflects the rich and turbulent history of Granada. The convent
was destroyed in 1856 by William Walker and was reconstructed in 1968. Today, the
church is a tourist destination and features a museum and cultural center where you
can enjoy a bit of Nicaraguan culture, paintings and old statues found on the Island
of Ometepe.
Laguna de Apoyo
The natural beauty of Laguna de Apoyo, the abundant flora and fauna, the calm and
clean water of the lagoon and the green slopes of the crater make Laguna de Apoyo an
incredible destination for national and foreign visitors. The laguna offers an
interesting variety of activities and is a great destination for eco-tourism. The
crater of Laguna de Apoyo was formed approximately 23,000 years ago, after a strong
volcanic eruption which left a hole measuring six kilometers in diameter. As time
passed, subterranean waters and rain filled the crater and the slopes became covered
with vegetation. Today this crater is considered to be a dormant volcano with some
activity still present through a few hot springs in its interior.
